Abstract

This study was to analyze the effect of the gate time on the gate patterns in the elderly woman with osteoarthitis. The WOMAC survey, which is about their OA group, was performed by 12 patients, and this study analyzed their walking with the recorded image that included zero, ten, 20, 30 minutes walking. The variables are stride length, gait velocity, support time, swing time and the change of joint, knee and hip joint angles. The main results are as follows. First, the stride of the affected leg was longer than the unaffected one. The reason is that the affected leg took less support time because of a pain. The average stride was reduced from ten minutes to 30 and had a similarity at zero minute and 20. It means that an early stage of stride needs warming-up. Second, the support time and swing time decreased because the pain and fatigue from 30 minutes walking were not obstacles to stride. The pain increased as time passed, and the fatigue at zero minute and 30 showed a significant difference, but the pain was not so strong to influence walking. Third, the joint angles increased or decreased not to one way but to various shape. The knee angle decreased as the ankle joint angle increased, so there are various compensation mechanisms in the unsound stride. In conclusion, the elderly woman with OA could reduce a hurt from a fall with enough warming up, which enlarges the range of the joint operation and brings stability of the joint. They also will need to reinforce physical strength in their affected legs because the different stride between the affected leg and the unaffected made continuous imbalance and instability. During 30 minute stride, the variables did not show a significant difference, and the pain was not too strong to walk, therefore, the walking exercise is helpful for the elderly woman with OA.
